“You have mental illness? Just get over it!”
Have had countless people tell me this.
I suffer from Depression, Anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID/MPD).
When it comes to Depression or Anxiety, I have had peope tell me to “get over it”, dont you think if I could just ‘get over it’, I would in a heartbeat. Do you really think I like crying for no reason or panicking at nothing? When it comes to PTSD, I have people ask me how do I have PTSD because I have never been in the military or was not a victim of child rape. It’s caused by Traumatic Experiences, even if you don’t think it’s traumatic. And most of all, my diagnosis of DID, many people think it’s just a ploy or I’m a faker. Yes because I want to just fake not knowing what has happened for hours, even days at a time because I’m not there, or have family and friends have to deal with “someone else”. How do I fake being allergic to things I’m not normally allergic to. Because I like getting massive headaches trying to contain several ‘alters’, etc, etc… I could go on and on.
But back on topic, sadly so many people think any mental illness (minor or major) is so easier to just get over it.
And yes some may fake it for attention (I don’t get WHY, it’s not fun at all!), but more and more people are coming out with different mental illnesses because it IS more common than people think. Honestly, I dont think people should self-diagnose and go to a professional to get diagnosed, but either way, mental illness is not a joke or something you just “get over”.
